Although the scientific study of religion may well have emerged, at least in part, because of the Enlightenment critique of religion, I will argue here - on historical and methodological grounds - that a properly formulated scientific study of religion necessarily precludes "critique potential" in the sense in which that concept is used by an increasing number of scholars today.
