The article seeks to contribute to the debate concerning the literary connections between the Gospel of John and the Mandaica by a re-examination of Eric Segelberg's suggestion that the footwashing in the Mandaean coronation rite (part of the initiation into priesthood) has been influenced by Jn 13:6-10. The Mandaean and the Johannine texts are firstly investigated separately, Jn 13:1-10 being considered with the broader context of Jn 12:1 - 13, 10. The concluding comparison stresses the interpretation of footwashing as preparation for exaltation, enthronement and a heavenly journey.
